LiC Staff and Be.Green Students are joined by the MP Apsana Begum at the launch of the Power of Food Fest 2025
It was Organic September and Leaders in Community (LiC) celebrated and educated on the power of natural produce. At LiC we believe that access to good quality affordable organic food can create a fairer and healthier community for all. A pertinent issue with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis ; and rise in food poverty and childhood obesity.
Due to our extensive networks developed through our food coop and gardening club, health and wellbeing are core strands of work we do at the Teviot Centre. It sits under Our World, Our Wellness campaign in which we educate residents about sustainable living and healthy eating. That’s why we were honoured to be a partner in the Tower Hamlets Power of Food Festival (PoFF – 18th – 28th September 2025). Organised by the Women’s Environmental Network’s (Wen) JustFact Programme.
On Tuesday 23 September we hosted our PoFF event. We brought the community together, to inspire and empower across generations and heritage; educate and raise awareness on nutrition for mental health and well-being; and share ideas on how to take care of the world we live in.
The day involved a ‘Garden Tour & Taster sessions’ from our community garden where residents grow local produce. Our food supplier Folx Farm and partner MADLEAP had stalls showcasing information on courses they are running.
The highlight of the event was LiC launching its Be.Green Cookbook. A publication compiled by students on our Be.Green Eco-Action Youth Programme. Using ingredients from our food coop they put together a series of their favourite recipes drawing on inspiration from heritage and home. Residents got a taste with the lunch that was provided on the day.
We relaunched our Tuesday Food Coop. Back after the summer break. The local community bought organic food at half the price, courtesy of the Alexander Rose Charity. The day ended with our partner Food Lives running the first of their 5-week creative workshops in the Teviot Centre Hall.
As Melanie Salisbury Food Coordinator at LiC said of the day:
“LiC is proud to be part of the JustFact programme and host Our World Our Wellness event. The Power of Food Festival gave LiC another opportunity to educate and entertain our residents about healthy eating and sustainable living. Also, showcasing our fantastic partners and the work that they do on our doorstep to create a just and fairer food system for current and future generations to come.”
