The Importance of Black History Month

LiC Staff at the Mayor of London Black History Month Event 2025 held at City Hall

Introduction

Leaders in Community is at the epicentre of the Teviot Estate. We manage the Teviot Centre and from this vantage point can bring our diverse and vibrant community together.  Black History Month (BHM) was no exception, in getting people to unite and understand one another on this year’s theme: ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’.

Although we celebrate our differences, our shared humanity and common experiences are the glue to our social cohesion. Events such as Black History Month are key to breaking-down barriers, developing empathy, and fostering a sense of belonging. Our Teviot Centre – ‘The Community Living Room’ – was adorned with posters and artefacts of historical and cultural significance. We also hosted the following thematic events:

Poetry and Craft Sessions

Whether it’s the spoken word and/or arts and crafts, our younger and older residents got to perform and produce this month. With Manorfield Primary School on our doorstep, children after school, for example, got to make medals on heroes and heroines; and tried out printing techniques in a session led by LiC’s Community Team and Champions.

Film Nights

From films that the whole family can watch, to tween and teenage movie nights, we screened a series of movies on black icons, history and culture. As the Teviot Centre is a Sky Up Digital Hub Partner, we were able to show these films for free due to the Wi-Fi Sky provides.

Careers Fair

In October half term, we opened our doors to high status businesses and underserved sectors to address the gap between education and employment through our Equitable Futures campaign.  We are thankful to the following organisations for taking time out of their busy corporate schedules to give career advice and insights to our young people: ABB,  Rockhunter, Team Matrix, Telehouse, Weightmans and West Ham United Foundation.

Mayor of London Event

As well as hosting BHM, we also celebrated it at City Hall. As partners in the Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) youth network, we were honoured to be part of this event.

As Syed Uddin CEO at LiC says:

“Leaders in Community is proud to serve the diverse and vibrant Teviot community. Now more than ever, we must protect the fabric of our city and the peaceful community relations we’ve all worked so hard to build. That’s why LiC proudly supports Black History Month — a time to reflect, celebrate, and continue the work toward equity and unity.”
